Highlighter is the product most people own and fewest people place well. It is also the one where placement matters more than price, because a $6 highlighter in the right spot beats a $60 one in the wrong spot every time.
The rule underneath all of it is simple. Highlighter fakes light. So it belongs where light would actually land if you stood near a window.

Where Does Highlighter Actually Go?
That order matters. If you only do one, do the tops of the cheekbones, angled up toward your temple rather than out toward your ear. That single stripe does most of the visible work.
The inner corner is the second highest-impact spot and the most skipped. A dot there opens the eye and takes about two seconds.
Your brow bone wants a light touch directly under the highest point of the arch, not the whole area under the brow. Too much there reads as shine, not structure. See makeup for a photoshoot.
Where Should You Never Put Highlighter?
The apples of your cheeks are the common mistake. They are already round and forward-facing, so adding shine there pushes them further forward and flattens the cheekbone you were trying to lift.
The tip of your nose is the second. Light on the tip makes a nose read as wider and shorter. Keep highlighter on the bridge and stop before the tip. See browse artists and rates.

On a round face, run the highlighter from the top of the cheekbone up toward the temple at a sharper angle. That vertical pull adds length.
On a long or oblong face, keep the same spot but make the stripe shorter and set it slightly wider. You are adding width, not length.
This is the part that is genuinely hard to judge from a photo of someone else’s face, which is why it is usually the first thing an artist corrects on a live session. See makeup that holds all day.
Cream or Powder, and Does It Change Where It Goes?
Cream highlighter goes on after foundation and before powder. If you set your face afterwards, keep the powder off the highlighted areas.
Powder highlighter is the final step. Use a small fluffy brush and tap off hard before it touches your face, because powder is much harder to take back once it is on. See date night makeup.

How Do You Fix Highlighter That Has Gone Too Far?
If that is not enough, tap a very small amount of translucent powder over the top with a fingertip.
The general principle: build in thin layers you can add to, because taking highlighter away is much harder than putting it on. See an artist watching your face on video.
Does Highlighter Work Differently in Photos?
This catches people out constantly at events. A placement that looks subtle in a bathroom mirror can read as a bright stripe under a flash, because the flash is a hard light source coming from one direction rather than the diffused light you dressed in.
If your evening involves photography, use a finely milled highlighter rather than one with visible glitter, and keep it to the cheekbone and inner corner only. Skip the nose bridge entirely.
Daylight photography is the opposite problem. Natural light is soft and forgiving, so you can be slightly more generous and it will still read as skin rather than product.
When highlighter is the wrong call
If your skin is actively flaking or you have raised texture across the cheek area, highlighter will make it more visible, not less. On those days a satin foundation and no highlighter looks better than any placement. Skipping a product is a legitimate choice, not a failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you put highlighter for beginners?
Start with two places only: the tops of your cheekbones and the inner corners of your eyes. Those two spots give most of the effect with the least risk.
Do you apply highlighter before or after blush?
After. Blush goes on first so you can see where the color sits, then highlighter goes above it on the bone so the two do not blend together.
Should highlighter go on the nose?
On the bridge, yes. On the tip, no. Light on the tip makes a nose read wider and shorter, which is usually the opposite of the goal.
Can you use highlighter on mature skin?
Yes, with a cream formula and a lighter hand. Powder highlighter clings to fine lines, while cream sits into the skin and reads as health rather than shine.
How much highlighter should you use?
Less than you think. Tap the brush off hard, apply, then look in daylight before adding more. Highlighter is far easier to build than to remove.
